This is the carapace (upper shell) and plastron (lower shell) of a large land tortoise belonging to the genus Geochelone. This specimen is about a meter in length. The Geochelonia often achieved large size and are never hinged. This specimen was found at Kanapoi, and dated to 4.1 million years. Modern day tortoises on the African Continent are very diverse with 7 extant genera and some 16 species.
