The Tragelaphini are medium to large antelope with distinctive spirally twisted and keeled horns that are present only in the males of most species, but in the extant eland and bongo, both sexes have horns.

The teeth of Tragelaphines teeth are low crowned. This right mandible has the P3 to M3 in wear. The teeth of Tragelaphines teeth are low crowned.

Three species of Tragelaphus are recognised in the Koobi Fora Formation, T.strepsiceros, T. nakuae, and the very rare T. guadryi.
