This cranium represents our own species Homo sapiens. As a species we have only been around for some 200,000 years. Features that distinguish us from our ancestors such as the large brain, collective intelligence, complex language and the use and production of "complex tools", mean that are now able to inhabit places that would have been beyond our reach in past times. We now modify our environment and live outside the normal constraints and pressures that would have influenced our population size. Today humans number some 7 billion, it is the first time that any hominin species has ever reached these numbers. The rapid growth in our own population over the past century has had a profound impact on our planet and the numerous other species with which we coexist. Now we are driving extinctions of other species at an unprecedented rate.
