This fossilized skull and lower jaw belong to a modern Homo sapiens individual, that lived some 10,000 years ago. It was found near Alia Bay at a place called Kubi Algi on the east side of Lake Turkana. This remarkably complete head and lower jaw has an interesting feature in that the skull shape appears elongated. Similar shaped skulls are seen in the head-bound mummies found in Egypt such as the skull of King Tut, (Tutankhamun). It may suggest that the practice of head binding for the purpose of beauty, might have occurred in people much further south than has been recognized previously. This skull and lower jaw were excavated by Margaret Avery and Richard Leakey in 1968, although the specimen was never published.
